Deployment
In general, the fewer modifications needed to support
annotations, the easier it will be to deploy such a
system.

No Modifications

Some solutions can be done entirely with HTML
2.0 forms and no other modifications.

Server Modifications

There are not that many servers implemented
presently.

Client Modifications

The number of clients is growing rapidly.
Convincing them all to implement a modification
to support annotations is going to be
challenging.

Proxy Servers

Proxy servers are still not widely deployed.
However, the CERN proxy is looking quite
good these days.

New Protocols
-
It is possible to introduce a new protocol to
address some of the scalability issues
associated with public annotations.
